However, the case of ethics is a different one: in matters of morality we cannot allow ourselves to be led by an authority, but have to make up our own minds about what is right and what isn’t: ‘Stealing is wrong’ is not a fact but a rule which is empty unless it is accepted by us as individual people. While happiness is the activity of living well, virtue represents the potential to live well. Everyone adheres to a moral doctrine of some kind. Only that will is morally good which obeys the moral law under the influence of such a subjective principle or motive as can be willed by the individual to become the universal law for all men. The kind of assent Aquinas has in mind here is not a matter of the intellect alone. Most propaganda just isn’t artistically interesting. Harris isn’t arguing that science has all the answers, but that science can conceivably determine all the answers with enough information and enough time. I do not favor calling the everyday moral competence of normally maturated moral individuals ‘moral expertise’, as Dreyfus and Dreyfus do. What harms the weak is called "evil", and what helps them is called good.
